Why Would Someone Need a Cane?

Medical canes offer preventative support in order to help users maintain balance as well as have access to a bit of extra stability so the user can keep weight off of a certain leg. Depending on the limitation of mobility, a person may have to use an assistive cane while he’s walking. Canes come in all different types, shapes, sizes, and even feature varying handles. Some canes even feature additional capabilities, such as the ability to fold, in order to remain compact when a person isn’t actively walking with it.

If you have minor balance issues, you may benefit from using a standard cane with a single tip. Quad canes, in contrast, have a wider base and four prongs (legs) at the bottom for added weight bearing capacity. Quad-style canes are designed with prongs that are angled outward to prevent tripping. If you need extra support and balance, but still have the strength to partially hold yourself up, you may even want to consider a walker.

We also carry many specialty walking aids, such as folding canes and seat canes. A seat cane is similar to a standard cane, but is equipped with a seat that comes in handy when one becomes tired during long walks.

Cane Sizing

In order to achieve perfect balance and stability, it is important for your cane to be appropriately sized.

  1. Choose the correct weight capacity. In order to ensure safe use, be sure to get a cane that is adequately designed to hold your weight. Most walking canes have a weight capacity that is between 200 and 500 pounds.
  2. Choose the correct cane height. The ideal cane height is when the top of the cane is at the crease of the wrist while the arms are at the side with a natural bend at the elbow. Choose a cane with a length that is similar to that measurement, and if your cane is height-adjustable, adjust the cane to match the distance between the floor and your wrist.

Note: You may want to get professional assistance if you’re having a difficult time getting the appropriate measurements. Your physician or physical therapist can also recommend the appropriate material and handle shape for your cane, as well as the type of grip you need.

How to Choose a Cane Handle Yourself

There are plenty of options when it comes to finding the right handle that can aid you with your grip, balance, and medical condition. Most cane handles won’t greatly affect the cane’s prices. Here are some very popular cane handles that people often choose from.

Offset Handle

Offset handles are extremely popular. They allow users to distribute their weight evenly along the shaft down to the tip of the walking cane. Many offset handles have foam or rubber grips that offer excellent gripping ability and comfort for users. Many quad canes have offset handles, since they’re normally used after an injury or for those who are recovering from a surgery.

Crook Handles

Crook handled canes are popular among many users. They feature a traditional, standard curved handle that has been around since the early years of walking canes. Also known as hook canes or tourist canes, these handles have great features that make them able to be hung on handles, your arm, or other places for convenience. Some tripod canes have these handles, and many cane tips can be installed on them to make them self-standing.

Ergonomic Handle

Many elderly people seek comfort from chronic pain associated with symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and other conditions that are common among the elderly. Therefore, these handles offer a special design to aid those with these problems and are also great for adding additional support to a user’s cane.

Orthopedic Handle

Orthopedic handles are designed to supply additional weight and balance support for users who have to keep weight off of their legs or knees. While they’re not as popular for everyday utilization, they are extremely useful and highly recommended for bariatric users, and on quad canes for the severely injured. These are just as popular as typical offset handle canes for many users, since the design is very similar.

Fritz Handle

Fritz handle canes, also known as T-Handle canes, are a popular commodity among arthritic users since it allows you to hold them with a comfortable grip. At the same time, they prove impressively ergonomic. They’re popular among men and provide a little bit of extra support for the palm to rest comfortably, while also being offering an aesthetically pleasing appeal.

Notes: When trying to choose a cane handle, a person needs to assess his ability to grip it properly while walking. Many seniors have slips and falls because of improper balance. The walking cane handle helps the most to aid in that balance for independent users who have a handicap or disability.

Canes need to be chosen for not only the safety they provide but also the comfort. Therefore, if you’re choosing a walking cane with a proper fit and comfortable handle, you should always test them out and see what is comfortable for you.
