At AvaCare Medical, our goal is to serve as a helping hand and guiding light for people living with disabilities, to help them find the products they need and to support them through difficult times.

This is especially true for America’s disabled veterans, the heroes who gave up everything to fight our battles. That’s why we offer a year-round discount for veterans and their families, as well as Hero Rewards, the opportunity to enter a triannual drawing for a $250 gift card by sharing their stories with us.

Now, with Veterans Day approaching, we’re spicing things up by donating $3 from every order placed by a veteran or their family members (and that’s on top of the 10% discount!) from November 9th to November 16th to the Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, which is dedicated to the support of disabled American heroes. The Freedom Team was founded by founded by Achilles International, a non-profit organization for people with disabilities.

The Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans introduces injured servicemen and women to long distance running, whether on foot, on prosthetics, or in hand-crank wheelchairs. Team members have the opportunity to compete in 9 mainstream marathons throughout the country. This geographic reach ensures that those who leave military hospitals and return home to remote communities have ample opportunities to maintain an active lifestyle. All Freedom Team activities are completely free of charge. Achilles sponsors the veterans and their families throughout the race weekend, in the process creating a strong network with shared goals and a commitment to wellness. The veterans and their families encourage and support one another through the trials of training, share in a collective feeling of excitement, anticipation, and anxiety leading up to the race, and delight in the incredible accomplishment of crossing a marathon finish line.

Achilles was founded in 1983 by Dick Traum, the first amputee to run a marathon on a prosthetic leg. The mission of Achilles is to help people with disabilities achieve through participation in mainstream athletics, particularly marathon running. Our goal is to improve health and fitness and increase the level of aspiration among people with disabilities. Being active in mainstream events increases confidence and self-esteem and helps the general public become comfortable interacting with those who have special needs.

The Freedom Team improves the health, fitness, future opportunities, and state of mind of OEF/OIF combat wounded veterans by providing them with the opportunity to train for and compete in mainstream marathons. The skills they gain by training for and competing in mainstream events helps the veterans develop and hone the attributes needed to successfully reintegrate into civilian life. The Freedom Team is unique in that it offers the opportunity to participate in mainstream events; to interact with non-veteran disabled Achilles athletes; to increase their level of aspiration in all areas of life – personal, professional, academic, and social; and to pursue a healthy lifestyle and improved connection with their families, who are Achilles’ guests for the race weekend. Freedom Team members have the opportunity to grow into leadership and mentor roles by assisting those who are newly wounded deal with the upheaval and distress that result from sudden catastrophic injury. Longtime athletes share their expertise with new members, helping them develop training regimens, swapping race tips, offering insight into dealing with new roles within the family unit, and providing support and encouragement to pursue new goals on and off the marathon course.
