Having allergies can be very uncomfortable, but there are allergy medications which will provide substantial relief from allergy symptoms. Some of these allergy medications can be purchased over the counter, while others require a prescription in order to acquire them.

Allergy Medications at AvaCare Medical

Any allergies medications offered by AvaCare Medical do not need a prescription in order to purchase; they are all over the counter allergy medicines.

Allergy symptoms can be annoying, disrupting and, for some, very painful. The following are some of the most common allergy symptoms:

  • Sneezing, itchy, runny or stuffed nose
  • Watery, red, itchy eyes
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Tingling in the mouth, or itchy palate, swollen lips or tongue
  • Swollen face
  • Hives
  • Anaphylaxis
  • A swollen area on the body
  • Hives
  • Itchy skin or skin rash
  • Coughing
  • Tightness of chest
  • Wheezing or shortness of breath

Thankfully, AvaCare Medical offers multiple allergy relief products including some of the following options, all designed to minimize your allergy symptoms and increase your overall comfort.

Before we can discuss allergy medication, we need to undertand; what causes allergies to develop? Allergies happen as a result of your body overreacting to something, be it pollen, milk, dust, or any other substance your body identifies as an allergen, and attacking that substance.

What Do Antihistamines Do?

When the body comes into contact with what it considers to be an allergen, the immune system overreacts, and releases a chemical called histamine into the bloodstream. Histamine causes the body’s cells to swell, and that is what causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as a runny nose, burning eyes, etcetera.

Antihistamines prevent the histamine from affecting the cells, and thereby stop the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Decongestant vs. Antihistamine

Antihistamines can reduce the symptoms of an allergic reaction and prevent them from worsening, but they’re best taken before the reaction occurs. Decongestants are better at minimizing swelling and congestion even once it has already happened.

1. Antihistamine Eye Drops

Antihistamine eye drops are used to reduce ocular (eye-related) allergy symptoms. Red, teary and itchy eyes are often a result of allergies, and, when they are, they can be treated with antihistamine drops.

What Do Antihistamines Eyedrops Do?

Antihistamine eye drops minimize histamine in the eye tissues. By doing so, they lessen the severity of ocular allergy symptoms. Antihistamine eye drops usually last for just several hours at a time, and need to be put into each eye at least twice daily.

2. Allergy Pills

There are several kinds of OTC allergy pills to choose from. Antihistamine pills prevent histamine from being released into the bloodstream, and stop the swelling from happening. Decongestant pills reduce swelling once it already occurred.

Best Allergy Pills

Claritin, Allegra, and Benadryl all offer the best allergy pills out there, and their allergy pills have been proven to provide the most allergy relief. Claritin is an antihistamine medication, used to treat typical allergy symptoms.

3. Allergy Nasal Spray

Allergy nasal sprays reduce several symptoms of allergies, including congestion and itchiness in the nose, and sneezing.

How Does Allergy Nasal Spray Work?

Allergy nasal sprays either shrink the swollen blood vessels in the nose back to their normal size, and thereby relieve congestion, or they block the histamine from attaching to the cells and causing them to swell (the swelling causes itchiness, and a runny or stuffy nose). The most common type of allergy nasal spray is the Flonase spray.

Kinds of Allergy Nasal Sprays

  • Antihistamine Nose Sprays: If you’re sneezing a lot and your nose is running, antihistamine nose sprays will do the job better than decongestant ones.
  • Steroid Nose Sprays: These are for when you’re sneezing a lot, or your nose is stuffed, running, or burning.
  • Decongestant Nose Sprays: If your nose is congested, try a decongestant nose spray.

4. Allergy Medicine for Kids

Not all allergy medicines are for kids; some of the allergy meds today are only for those ages 12 and up. However, there are several children’s allergy medicines which are fine for young ones to use with adult supervision. For example, Flonase, Claritin and Benadryl offer specially designed and oftentimes tastefully flavored children’s allergy medicines. Look for the word “children” on the medication; i.e. if you’re looking for Claritin for your child, the bottle should say “Children’s Claritin.” Never give your child aged 11 or under any medication unless your doctor has approved it and it is clearly marked for children.

If you only want a non drowsy antihistamine, Allegra or Aller-ease, as well as Claritin or Claritin generic brands are top choices to keep your child as alert as possible.

5. Antihistamine Creams

Allergy creams such as antihistamine reduce the burning or itchy feeling resulting from rashes or allergic reactions. The allergy cream should be applied three or for times in a day to soothe the itchy feelings.

Allergy Relief Brands

The brands that offer the most effective OTC allergy meds are as follows:

  • Benadryl
  • Claritin
  • Zyrtec
  • Flonase Allergy Relief Sprays
