Yes, it is safe, but the best thing would be to take the lowest possible dosage that’ll help you. Start off at a 0.2 dosage, and increase the amount as necessary up to 10 mg of melatonin. Dosages 30 mg and over can be harmful, and should never be taken unless you’ve been told to do so by an experienced doctor.

How long does it take for 5mg of melatonin to kick in?

Melatonin 5 mg typically takes about a half hour to kick in. However, someone with delayed sleep phase syndrome, who naturally falls asleep past midnight (at 1 or 2 am), should take the melatonin 2 hours before he wants to fall asleep.

Is it safe to take melatonin daily?

Taking Melatonin every day is definitely safe for the average individual. There are a few concerns to keep in mind, though:

  • Melatonin increases blood sugar levels, so it shouldn’t be used by diabetics
  • Melatonin may lessen the effects of birth control pills, seizure and high blood pressure medications, and other drugs.
  • It may cause daytime grogginess, dizziness, irritability, and stomach cramps.
