1. Is it absorbent enough?

The amount of liquid a washable incontinence pad can contain is mainly dependant on how absorbent the washable incontinence bed pad is, and therefore, the absorbency level of an underpad is an extremely important factor to check out before making your purchase. 

The heavier the incontinence, the more fluid retention the pad needs to have. An overnight reusable incontinence pad needs to be able to absorb at least 400 milliliters (about 2 cups) of fluid to adequately prevent leakage, so when looking for a washable underpad for overnight, make sure it can contain at least that much.

Of course, every person will be different, but as a general rule, adults generally produce the highest volume of liquid at the fastest flow rate, and therefore need very absorbent reusable underpads. 

2. How big is it?

Measure your mattress, and then try to find a bed pad that will cover as much of it as possible. The reusable incontinence bed pad should, at the very least, cover 6 inches in every direction of the “target area.” However, more coverage is always ideal, since it affords you room to move, and in case you toss or turn in your sleep, you want to make sure as much of the bed as possible is covered.

3. What’s it made from?

You want to make sure the washable waterproof bed pad is made of a comfortable material, so that when you lie down on it, it won’t cause skin irritation or bed sores. Another thing to check is if the back of the pad is non-slip, and will stay in place.
