The Best Transport Chairs Have Bare Necessities

All of the models that we have onsite are lightweight and built for user comfort and safety. One thing that makes transport chairs stand out when compared to standard or manual wheelchairs is that they are not built for self-propulsion. Of course, there are a few models that can offer both functionalities when necessary, using removable larger rear wheels with rails. In general, though, many of the best transport chairs have just the essentials that are needed in terms of transferring patients or users from one place to another. Some of these features are:

Durable Frames

Although the frames of transport chairs are small and don’t seem to have a lot going for them, they’re made with extremely durable medical-grade aluminum or steel (and sometimes both). This allows for maximum security. When combined with comfort and other premium components, these models can greatly impact or increase the amount of weight a transport chair can hold.

Most standard transport wheelchairs can hold anywhere from 250 to 300 pounds, but some of the best chairs out there can hold anywhere from 400 pounds all the way up to 500 pounds. This offers more stability for heavier users. Having the right weight capacity for a user’s transport chair is important. While you may not be taking a lot of belongings, a user should never purchase a chair not compatible with his weight needs for both safety reasons and for warranty purposes.

Fabric Seats

Transport chairs may not have cushions that are as soft as the ones some manual wheelchairs or electric wheelchairs come with. However, the seats are specially designed to cushion the user and hold him in a “pocket” style seat that contours around the user. These seats can come in various sizes ranging from 17 inches all the way up to 22 inches, to accommodate those who have larger hips and weigh more.

When choosing any wheelchair, including the best transit wheelchair for a person’s needs, the person should consider purchasing a chair that is larger than his hip width in order to allow maximum transportability. One thing to note, however, is that the transport chair for everyday use shouldn’t be too large for his own size. This can ensure that he won’t slide around so much in the seat, and can reduce tipping. For hospitals, however, having the largest sizes possible may be a common practice, because a hospital or medical facility needs to accommodate numerous users of various sizes.

Adjustable and/or Detachable Fold Up Foot Rests

All transport wheelchairs aside from rollator models have detachable or adjustable footrests. Indeed, all are adjustable, but some may simply not be detachable. This is to ensure that the user’s feet can be positioned properly in order to provide optimum comfort and security. This keeps the person’s feet off the floor in order to prevent injury. It can also allow for easier transport by folding up the seat in order to transfer from the chair to a hospital bed, commode, or any other destination.

Specially Dedicated Wheels

Many of these models feature wheels that are noticeably different than standard versions. Most transport chairs don’t have large bulky wheels; instead, they come with much smaller ones. While some may have slightly larger rear wheels, they are normally not much larger than the front caster wheels. This is to ensure even weight balance and allow for smooth mobility.

Some Models Have a Safety Positioning Belt

When it comes to safety, nobody wants to be sliding around slipping out of the seat. Because of this, the best manufacturers have put safety positioning belts on some models of transport chairs to ensure security for their riders.

Lightweight Design

All transport chairs are lightweight, and many of them are much lighter than self-propelled wheelchairs. Their frames are small, yet durable, but this is to help make the chair easier for its job – which is to transport patients of users from one place to another. Most transport wheelchairs are not intended for long sitting periods. If a user needs one for a majority of the day, it is recommended that he purchase a wheelchair cushion to improve comfort and circulation.

Portable and Foldable

All transport chairs are considered portable in some fashion, and they all fold up. This is to ensure that they can be moved out of the way when necessary, or put away neatly and in compact places for travel. The best portable wheelchairs on the market offer extreme mobility and have everything that a user needs, including the ability to provide extra attachments if necessary.

Optional Accessories

Aside from wheelchair cushions, the best lightweight wheelchairs for travel have accessories that can be purchased separately. This may include cup holders, oxygen tank holders, backrest cushions, attachment rails for privacy, and even anti-tip bars to increase the safety level.
