What is a Non-Adhesive Dressing?

A non-adhesive dressing doesn’t feature a sticky backing. This makes it less likely for the dressing to cling to the wound. However, using a non-stick dressing does not guarantee that it won’t stick to the wound; if the wound is in the process of draining, and the dressing is changed relatively infrequently, there is a distinct possibility that the dressing will begin to cling to the wound.

Non-Adhesive Bandages Vs. Non-Adherent Dressings

Non-adhesive and non-adhering can definitely be termed as similar, and the two aforementioned terms are often used interchangeably yet they are decidedly different - they’re not the same thing. Here are some things to know about non-adhesive and non-adherent dressings, and their similarities and differences:

  • Non-adhesive dressings for wounds don’t have a sticky backing, but can stick to a wound that is draining if the dressing is not changed often.
  • Non-adherent dressings feature a shiny polyethylene film which is designed to ensure that the dressing doesn’t stick to the wound.
  • A non-adherent pad is usually adhesive; such a dressing doesn’t have a sticky backing, and features a polyethylene film that resists adhering to the skin. However, a non-adhesive dressing is not necessarily non-adherent.

Best Non-Adhesive Dressings

To better assist you, we’ve put together a non-adhesive dressings guide, which contains information on all the best non-adhesive dressings there are on the market today. Our team researched countless non-adhesive products, and the following ones made it to our best non-adhesive dressings list! Some of these can be used as non-stick dressings for open wounds, and others can be used as non-adhesive dressings for burns. Instead of browsing through too many products to keep track of, simply check out the top non-adhesive dressings below that we believe have the biggest chance of being what you need.

Allevyn Ag Silver Barrier Hydrocellular Dressing

This non-adhesive dressing from Smith & Nephew is an extremely absorbent choice, and allows for optimal exudate management. It features a breathable waterproof and bacteria-proof top film. It’s also non-adherent; it’s designed to prevent healing tissue from growing into the dressing. The Allevyn Ag Silver Barrier Hydrocellular Dressing features a foam core, and protects the wound from microbial contamination so that it can hopefully heal quickly and properly.

PolyMem Silver Dressing

PolyMem Silver Dressings can absorb more than 10 times their weight in exudate. These dressings are extremely absorbent, and should leave behind no residue. The semi-permeable foam backing allows for maximum breathability while still working as a barrier to liquids. This dressing kills 99.9% of all bacteria and fungi that it was tested for.

Aquacel Foam Dressing

The Aquacel Non-Adhesive Foam Dressing is a soft, absorbent dressing that features a waterproof barrier against bacteria penetration. The person wearing the dressing can shower and bathe with it, since it is waterproof. Although the dressing part - the area of the dressing that is designed to cover the wound - is not adhesive, the silicone border is.

Biatain Foam Dressing

Biatain is a leading wound care brand, with the highest quality products plus a longstanding reputation to back them. The Coloplast Biatain Non-Adhesive Foam Dressing is a sterile non-adhesive dressing that is highly absorbent while simultaneously semipermeable for breathability. The dressing is suitable for use under compression bandages. Another popular option from Biatain is the Biatain Super Non-Adhesive.

Allevyn Non-Adhesive Hydrocellular Foam Dressing

The Allevyn Ag Non-Adhesive Hydrocellular Foam Dressing features a hydrocellular core which absorbs and retains liquid. The pink film at the outer layer is waterproof, prevents bacterial contamination, and helps maintain a moist healing environment. The Allevyn Non-Adhesive Hydrocellular Foam Dressing is conformable, comfortable and soft, and can be cut to size so that it can be used for differently sized wounds.

PolyMem Max Dressing

The PolyMem Non-Adhesive Max Dressing is a thicker dressing than standard non-adhesive dressings. This dressing contains small silver particles, and is an ideal choice for wounds with a high level of drainage or for a dressing that will be worn for a longer period of time.

Adaptic Petrolatum Impregnated Dressing

The Adaptic Petrolatum Impregnated Dressing is designed to be non-adhering and shouldn’t stick to the wound. This allows the dressing to be removed without traumatizing the new tissue. This Adaptic non-adhesive dressing is impregnated with petrolatum emulsion which protects the wound, and prevents the bandage from adhering to the wound.

What is a Non-Adhesive Silver Dressing?

Many non-adhesive dressings are considered silver dressings. A silver dressing contains silver ions which reduce bioburden (the amount of microbial contamination in the wound area). The silver in the dressing is released in a varying amount which is based upon how much exudate and bacteria the wound contains. Silver dressings are beneficial for use in the first few weeks after the wound is infected, but have no special advantages for closed surgical incisions and clean wounds. Since there are advantages and disadvantages to silver dressings, they should only be used following a doctor’s guidelines.
